Supported Housing
“Helping people get into safe, affordable housing is my top priority. And thanks to [the Tenant Based Rental Assistance renewable grant], I know we can help keep people with mental illness in decent housing.”
-Jill, Case manager and Housing Coordinator
Breakthrough has provided housing assistance to people who have mental illness through the Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) program since 2001. This is a renewable grant that we have received from Kansas Housing Resources through the state of Kansas to help members and non-members with mental illness in this area. Since the beginning of the grant, rental assistance has been provided for 139 families. We know how vital safe, decent, and affordable housing is for people experiencing serious mental illness. Breakthrough staff works with landlords and leasing agencies in the community to help them understand the effects of mental illness and how best to work with the individual renting the property. We also assist members with maintaining their homes to make it the most comfortable living experience possible.
If someone is not comfortable at their home base, things like employment and education become secondary. So making sure that someone’s home life is secure is very important in the steps to mental illness recovery.
