ESS Representative Payee Program
Episcopal Social Services (ESS) / Venture House operates an Organizational Representative Payee program for vulnerable recipients of Social Security benefits. Other benefits handled by the program include Veterans Administration, Railroad Retirement, private pensions and widow annuities. These recipients, because of disabilities ranging from insecure living situations, to mental illness and substance abuse, to developmental disabilities, have been deemed by SSA as not able to directly receive and manage funds.
The primary goal of the Payee program is to help the beneficiaries obtain financial security. In addition to assisting the beneficiary with a stable disbursement of their funds, ESS / Venture House staff and volunteers are a positive influence in helping the beneficiary in other areas of their lives. We foster independence by providing social support, serving as a role model and providing community referrals. Payee volunteers ensure that the beneficiary's day to day needs for food, shelter and personal needs are met.
The Organizational Representative Payee program has served hundreds in our community throughout the last 20 years and currently serves more than 350 clients per month in Wichita and surrounding areas. Our staff and volunteers work to provide each client with assistance in maintaining an independent lifestyle.
ESS operates a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program that is available to payee clients and the general public.
